Spelling words by adding -ing English lesson

What will I learn from the English lesson spelling words by adding –ing?

During this lesson you will learn how to add –ing onto the end of words. At the end of the lesson is an exercise to practise using the correct spelling using –ing.

A quick reminder what vowel and consonants are

Vowels = a, e,  i, o, u.

Consonants = b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, I, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z.

                                                    End of the verb            -ing form                                                                     

Rule1: -

A consonant + -e

Smile

Write

sneeze

   Delete the –e and add –ing

   Smiling

   Writing

   sneezing

Rule2: -

One vowel + one consonant

sit

   Double the consonant and add – ing

   Sitting

   Running

   Planning

   Crying (w, x, and y MUST NOT BE DOUBLED)

Rule3: -

two vowel + one consonant

read

   add – ing DO NOT Double the consonant

Rule4: -

Two consonant

   add – ing DO NOT Double the consonant

Letters that you should not double

There are a few exceptions to rule 2, the letters w, x, and y MUST NOT BE DOUBLED

Examples of words not to double

Snow = snowing

 Fix = fixing

 Say = saying
